Light Bearers: The Stars That Shine
Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.14 Do all things without complaining and disputing,15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights (stars) in the world,16 holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.17 Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.18 For the same reason you also be glad and rejoice with me.
The Light of Love
What is more powerful; the light, or the darkness?
Well, that all depends upon your perspective. As Christians our first response is to say “light” because it reminds us of the awesome power we associate with God our Father in Heaven. But is that actually true? Is light really more powerful than the ever-present darkness? Darkness is a constant, and it comes with no effort, but light only comes about by expending great amounts of energy. And once that energy is spent, then you are once again, left with nothing but darkness all around you!
Luke 8:16 “No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light.
Let’s look at a candle for an example. A candle burns only so long as there’s wax to feed the flame. Or an oil lamp will only burned so long as there is oil, and once that oil is burned away, that light goes out, and your whole house reverts back into darkness. So there is a constant need to replenish the oil.
Exodus 27:20 “And you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually.
Light represents a masculine and active attribute of God in our lives. It’s like the Sun you see outside everyday. We tend to take it for granted, but the power of the Sun is truly incredible! From our perspective, the Sun looks like a very small ball of light and no bigger than the Moon in size. Even though in reality, 1.3 millions Earths can fit in the Sun, and the Moon is actually about a quarter of the size of the Earth. So looks can be deceiving!
1 Corinthians 15:41 There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory.
Now, we know the Sun gives off heat. We know that if we stay in the sunlight for too long we get a sunburn. We also know that it makes the plants and flowers grow… but you never think about why or how it does this? Plants are actually store houses of energy and the energy that is in a plant goes into the thing that eats it, and also that same energy carries over to the thing that eats the thing, that ate the plant! That Sun energy goes an awful long way! The Sun is an amazing powerhouse of energy. In fact, there is so much energy expended from it, that less than the amount of sunlight that can fit in the palm of your hand, can start a fire! As a child, many of us, especially boys, used to take a magnifying lens and catch things on fire (Oh Lord, how many sacrifices of these poor tiny soul must be burned each year on the altar of “discovery”? Sorry, I just felt maybe someone should lament their sacrifice. Plus, I too was guilty of such dastardly acts at age 7) The thing is that there is no additional power source used for this process of burning with a lens. This is just the same light energy that touches your skin each time you go out in the Sun. In fact, if you take just 2 square meters of sunlight and concentrated it down into a single point, it could melt steel like it was butter! And all this from an object about 93000000 miles (150 million kilometers) away from Earth! THAT, my friend is a LOT of POWER!
John 5:35 He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.
This power is like your life, you have so much energy inside you, wanting to be used up for a purpose and waiting to break free of being nothing useful! And sometimes, there is so much of this energy that it makes you feel restless inside, and you become a little stir-crazy. So we try to find busy activities to occupy our time with… but we don’t always know what activities are good and useful for us to do. So often, that energy gets spent on useless things that amount to almost nothing of any real meaning. Sometimes these energies seem like constructive things, but mostly they amount to very little. Or we become so involved with the goings on around us that we become consumed by other people’s business to the point of burning the people we love with too much friction. It almost has to make you wonder if all this wasted power and potential is part of some sinister intelligence trying to sap your effectiveness, and perpetuating a world of spiritual darkness… hmm, it makes you think.
Matthew 24:29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
But what if we could focus our energies into one single point, like that giant magnify lens? Imagine you are the star like the Sun and you have some energy to spend. You can shine all around and make people’s days brighter! Or you can focus all that energy into a single point and melt away any opposition set before you. The finer the point you concentrate your energies into, the more it can burn! So be careful which ants you burn on your path to self-discovery! Because, even though you may elevate your cause and we all look pretty small from up there, know that none of us are an ant. We are human souls with feelings. So make sure you focus your attentions on pure and noble things with love!
Matthew 17:2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.
The people that shine lightly (Expand), or those that focus that energy for a cause (Concentrate), are both instruments of God’s light. Neither choice is wrong, until you consider your purpose. If you are content just being as you are, being you, and shining happily and brightly, then you are using you light within you perfectly. Because you inspire and make the burdens of others feel less cumbersome. You make those around you feel lighter and the weight of the world is somewhat lifted a little by you. But not everyone is content to be light hearted. Some want more. Some want to right an injustice. Some want to turn awareness to a cause. Some want to accomplish some great goal, and these people that focus all their energies into this single task are a powerful force to reckon with.
Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Either way, you are sending an energy forth from you. It takes effort to be a beacon into a dark world, and as long as you are willing to shine, the world is a brighter place for having you in it.
