Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
1 Thessalonians 5:8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.
Each day your mind is assaulted on many fronts. The enemy is looking to establish his beachhead in your soul. Once he has laid his foothold, he plans to crack away at your spiritual amour and bring your fortress of solidarity into ruin.
It does not matter how firm you believe that, your mind is an impregnable fortress, or believe with enough effort you can accomplish anything. You may even believe that your religion will protect you. He is there, submerging you like a stone in water, looking for any chink or chip in your armor, trying to wiggle his way in. And the harder you resist and fight it… THE MORE YOU LET HIM IN!
(To quote Star Wars: Obi-Wan: I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.)
Okay, don’t panic. Let me explain:
The more you try to resist something, the tighter it makes its grip on you, like a spiritual python or boa-constrictor. The only way to make it loosen its grip is to simply tighten-up and stop struggling and wrestling with it.
I am not saying to allow evil into your life. I am saying, to not be foolish enough to let it rule you with blind fear, and empowering its manipulating forces to direct your actions.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
When is a good time to worry about something?
- Does worrying help solve a problem and make it go away? No, it just compounds the problem you have with stress, which can also make you sick.
- Does worrying help make you think clearer so you can find a solution? No, it only clouds your judgment further and usually keeps you away from finding a solution that might just come otherwise.
- Does it make people like you more or feel sympathetic towards your plight? Maybe, but mostly, it just annoys the people around you, or you spread your worries onto them like a cold virus, and they become miserable too!
Worrying is a kind of rehearsing over-and-over a problem, or perceived problem, in your mind, until the point that it has robbed you of all your joy, clouds your senses, and impairs your judgment. In fact, worrying is a kind of warning light, that you are getting further and further away from GOD, and not closer to Him. It means that you are not believing and relying upon him to help, and guide you. It is actually a way of trying to control a situation and keeping everyone, even God out. And the more you worry, the more it controls everything you do, until your world is left in ruins. I have met a great many people who let different forms of worry and control, destroy their lives.
Our first instincts may be to cling tighter to something, if we are afraid we will lose it. But usually smothering something, emotionally, mentally or physically is 99.9 out of 100 times the worst thing you can do. Compulsions and obsessions are rooted in this kind of behavior. It creates a type of rigidness in our spiritual body, which is much like the rigor mortis that sets into a corpse, and flexibility is lost. Rigidness, only makes change seem impossible, and then when it inevitably comes, it is dangerous, or detrimental to your spirit, if you resist it too hard. Your whole life’s principals can come crashing down on you, when reality hits. This then leads to; aggression, irritability, depression, isolationism and a myriad of other problems.
Now, I am not saying to go in the extreme in the other direction either. If you don’t make any effort… well, you can quickly lose everything and that constrictor will swallow you whole, and not even write you a thank you note, either!
Matthew 26:41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
The balance is right in between. Let situations arise an awareness in you, and constantly stay vigilant, and not be found sleeping at your watch.
Luke 11:21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace.
Awareness is the one of the greatest powers that you posses. Not to be mistaken with over-analyzing, or scrutinizing over everything. It is having a heightened sense of spiritual awareness of a potential problem, rather than over-reacting to a situation that can become dangerous by being foolish.
Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.
Proverbs 18:7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul.
Proverbs 20:3 It is honorable for a man to stop striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel.
Ecclesiastes 10:14 A fool also multiplies words. No man knows what is to be; Who can tell him what will be after him?
As parents, or lovers, or “concerned” Christians we get a little “over zealous” about the things we care about. And sometimes, we hinder the growth of those around us, by making our presence too heavily felt in the lives of the people we care about. And unfortunately, not knowing the balance of; when to speak and when to let the other person decide their own actions, only drives a wedge between you and what it was that you were trying to protect. This is the act of an over-controlling personality. Control is an illusion and anytime you think you have full control over a situation, the more the enemy finds his way in to create chaos in your spiritual home.
Matthew 12:43 “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none.44 Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.‘ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order.45 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”
The Dark House Within:
Many times, our greatest enemy is lying-in-the-wait in the darkness of your own home. He lurks in your ignorance and preys on your fears.
Let’s imagine you come home one night and the lights are all out in your house, due to something like a power-failure or black-out. Now you know how you set-up your house, and manipulating in the dark should be a rather simple thing to do. So you are walking along, and all-of-a-sudden, you trip over something in the darkness! You reach-out to find out what it is, but there is nothing you can find there that is out of place. So, you try and get back up and move to another place in your house when suddenly, you trip again. And again you can find nothing there in the darkness that tripped-you-up. Again and again you fall to something that is unseen, and now this really starts to unnerve you. “THERE’S A DEMON IN MY HOUSE!!” you begin to scream “OUT YOU DEMON!”. You panic and start to run around, or swat at shadows, or after a while, you cower in a corner, afraid to get up again, or even move at all.
Matthew 6:23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
But when the lights come back on, and you find that your pet turtle has escaped from his cage, and he has been wondering around the house in the darkness, and you have simply been tripping over him, as he scurries away from you for safety.
This is your inner demon; the devils that plagued you in your darkness. Your enemy is ignorance and foolishness, and in the dark, nothing makes sense. But when you give your enemy a name. Call it what it is, it loses its grip and power over you.
Mark 9:28 And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”
“Ah, I am afraid of being alone…. Oh, It‘s loneliness”
“I am afraid of being hurt again… now I get it, it’s abuse”
“Really, I am afraid of not being in control because it reminds me of being vulnerable to something in my past?… Wow, it‘s vulnerability”
Shedding light on your problems, lets you have the advantage of learning how to deal with your problems, and in the right light, these personal demons seem pretty silly to have manipulated you for so long.
KNOWING THE BEAST:
The enemy comes to us in many ways, to fool us and to try to manipulate our way of thinking. He is a cunning foe, and the enemy is disguised as ALL things, even as an angel of light.
2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.
There is no one thing that he is disguised as. He is in everything, or rather in our experiences that we share with everything, trying to sway us from a higher purpose and joining to his logic (Or light) of living a self-serving life; rather than the logic (Or light) of spiritual-truths, that frees us from this life and its desires.
The best ways to understand the enemy and his tricks is by looking at the book of Revelations 13:17-18. This passage has brought chills and countless sleepless nights to millions over the ages.
Revelations 13:17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.
To understand this, we need to look below the physical meaning and look at this at the level of spiritual truth; not as the physical event of the “End times”; and see what it means to you as an individual right now, and how you apply this to yourself.
On the level of the soul, it is a kind of a word game for you to decipher and see the true face of your enemy, so he can be faced head on.
Now this begins with a purchase and a sale.
Buy n’ Sell:
Selling: Preaching or Teaching.
Buying: Accepting what is taught.
When you sell something, you are a salesman, persuading another to buy into what you have to sell them. This is you teaching and persuading through a type of logic. We sell our truth to nonbelievers every chance we get.
Buying is about accepting what someone is trying to teach you, or share with you. Are you buying any of these things I have said so far? Good, because I am sellin’ it to ya’!
With this knowledge of buying and selling, the parable of the “10 virgins” makes a little more sense when it says:
Matthew 25:9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves’
There was a game back, in this time, when the groom would try to sneak into the wedding unnoticed, and if he got there, and no one caught him, everyone had to give him a gift. So the virgins would keep vigilant watch to spot him, so he couldn’t sneak-in. And they lit-him-up, when he approached so all could see him.
Now, the oil in their lamps represents their spirit, and the flame of the lamp, is the light of the Spirit, that also lights the way for others. So the wise, pure virgins kept enough light to show the way of the groom, and light-him-up for all the others in the dark to see Him. And they kept only enough oil to fill their own lamps. This is analogy for you filling your soul with enough light to show you the way, and keep your spiritual house filled with light, so no darkness can take its hold with-in you. Your journey is your own, and though your light may shine for a moment on another’s path, they still need a lamp and oil, of their own, to carry with them, once you walk away.
But the foolish virgins slept, and they had no idea of what to do, as their spirits turned dark. Ignorance to the things of the Spirit blinded them, and they had failed in their one, most important task. To carry the light, and show the Groom to the world.
So, in a sense, the wise women were saying, “We only have what we need to be saved, ourselves. But go learn for yourself what you need to be saved”
The mark is an indicator of possession of what you belong to, like a branding. It can be either a physical or spiritual identifying nomenclature. But since this lesson is focusing on the spiritual aspects, we will focus on this “mark” as being a spiritual mark of commitment, and what you dedicate yourself too.
Mark: Your dedication and commitments
How the “mark” works:
What are you dedicating your thoughts, feelings and resources too? This will help you distinguish who you belong to, and what your mark looks like. Is it a 666 or 777?
The Numbers 6’s & 7’s:
- The number 6: This is the day “man” was created in the book of Genesis 1:25.
So it refers to: The things of Man: the Flesh
- The number 7: This is the day of reverence and rest in scriptures. For six days God creates, but on the seventh day, God takes back what He created (Genesis 2:1).
So it refers to: The things of Truth: the Spirit
All of our life works in a balance of Flesh, and Spirit. It is a balancing act that we perform each day, to walk our spiritual journey. We do things, and we learn their lessons, taught to us by them. This is how understanding is formed.
It is easy to mock a performer, until you have tried to perform their craft yourself. From experience, you learn to appreciate the skills of the actor/musician/comedian/etc. on the stage, because now you know how hard it is to accomplish what it is that they do. Go ahead and try to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. I wear a US men’s 13; care to try em’ out?
Why are the numbers mentioned 3 times?:
The 3 markings are indicators for the separate, yet equally important, attributes of yourself.
Your: Mind, Body and Spirit.
They are illustrated in Deuteronomy 6:6
Deuteronomy 6:8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Attributes of self:
Spirit: The doors are the way to your heart; your spiritual abode.
Mind: Frontlets are the way to your mind through your perception.
Body: Hands are representative of your deeds and actions, or works
So what are you; thinking, feeling and acting upon today? Is it Man’s reasoning, or God’s reasoning? If all your actions, and thoughts are towards selfish things, then your heart will be there as well. Or if you are feeling and thinking selfish things, then your actions will follow. If you are acting on your feelings, so too, will your thoughts be. All three are connected.
Mind 6, Body 6, Spirit 6:
6+6+6 = 666 (No, not 18)
If your; actions, thoughts, and feelings are with the goodness of His Spirit, as God illustrated with his son Jesus Christ, you get a mark of :
Mind 7, Body 7, Spirit 7:
7+7+7 = 777 (No, smart guy, not 21 either)
If any of these 7’s are a 6, they all are reverted back to 6′s. You can not be thinking about the Spirit’s work and then be doing sinful things. You can not feel His goodness while thinking wicked things. You can not be divided in your commitments. You are all in, or you are not! (Matthew 12:25; Matthew 6:24)
The Riddle of the Beast:
So now that the foundation has been laid, it is easy to see, that this is all simply a little word play and NOT complicated at all. Often times, the simplest explanations is the correct one.
17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.
Let’s break this down, step-by-step, and keep in mind, that this is on the level of spiritual truth, and not to explain the literal physical aspects of the book of Revelations.
17 and that no one may buy or sell…
This would mean that you can not (Buy) understand or (Sell) reason with the world unless…
…You are of the world.
…except one who has the mark or the name of the beast,
18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding…
This is a call to be wise and understand a riddle. It is not a huge secret, only a small one.
…calculate the number of the beast,…
You don’t need to calculate anything! The word used here, is translated into “calculate” but that is not its only meaning. Its origin of the word is Greek.
The word is: “psephizo”
psephizo means: To count with pebbles; OR, it also means: to “REASON”.
A lot of the words used in the holy Scriptures are used as a type of play-on-words, with multiple meanings. Like the word for beginning (re’shiyth) can mean; head, top, summit, upper part, chief, total, sum, height, front, beginning.
For fun try seeing Genesis 1:1 with the word head used for beginning. There is serious truth there. J
Now use the definition of “REASON” or rather “Understanding” instead of the English word chosen for “Calculate”.
…calculate the number of the beast…
So it now reads: “Understand the number of the beast”
Again, this is a call to figure-out this very simple riddle.
The “Beast” is?:
…the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
The “mark” the name and the number are all the same!
The name (Is the number) of the beast
…for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.
MAN IS THE BEAST! On the level of the spirit, YOU are the “Beast”, that this passage is referring to. If you are not part of the BODY OF CHRIST, you are part of the BODY OF THE BEAST.
Colossians 1:24 I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church,
We are all beasts by nature, and not spiritual beings, until we look to spiritual things by a conscious choice. The enemy comes to you in every way you live your life:
- In the movies you watch, and how you accept them.
- In the books you read, and how you accept them.
- In the people you meet, and how you accept them and their beliefs.
The “Beast” is you and everything you do as a carnal being. We are all animals by nature, so we need to overcome our primal state by looking to the Spirit for guidance, through our choices. If you don’t, spiritual things will never make sense to you and then you become lost in the world of the dead in the Spirit. But to those that have elevated and shed their beast-self, nothing this world craves, makes sense. Because then we belong to another master who has bought our souls freedom at a VERY high price!
1 Corinthians 7:23 You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.
It is in the balance of; living our lives, and then learning from it; that we overcome. We still live, while we are alive, but until we shed our mortal coil, we are servants to our neighbors, all around us. But being a slave and being a servant are two very different things. We use this life as a vehicle to understanding; not this life using us to no avail.
So refuse to let the enemy consume you. Because what you eat makes you stronger. You take on the strength of the thing you ate, as it makes your muscles grow. Lucifer sees this as his way to overpower God. He sees that the more he consumes, the greater he becomes and the lesser God will be. But it doesn’t matter how strong he becomes in the flesh, because the Spirit is infused into everything. So the Spirit will always win!
James 4:4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Matthew 7:14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
Revelation 20:7 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea.9 They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
But Lucifer is the Devil; that cunning serpent of old, who plots and schemes to consume you whole and use you for his benefit. But all he consumes is vanity. The power he seeks is empty… Christ is strength. True strength, and no beast can overcome His truth and Spirit. So, do not lose your saltiness. And do not lose that fire within you! Let your full life be a sacrifice worth offering to be consumed at the Master’s feast.
Mark 9:49 “For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.
Revelation 3:16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.
