Our true desires
What is your greatest desire? To be powerful, to be famous, to be rich, to be loved and admired by others, to be respected or is it something like the feeling of just being secure? What if you had all these things? Would this really make you feel satisfied? Do you think this will help you feel complete? Time and time again people have had all these things in their life, but yet they still weren’t satisfied. In fact many people that have these things are even more dissatisfied after they got them! These things often lead to doubt, fear, aggression, insecurity, hatred and often an overall sense of emptiness. Why do you suppose that this is? The truth is, you can never be truly happy, unless you find happiness and peace within yourself. This is not something that just happens. It takes time and it takes effort, and if you’re not willing to put the effort into it, then it will never happen. So, right about now you might be asking yourself “Okay smart guy. Where do I go from here?”. The answer is simple, you need to look within yourself. The answers have been with you since the beginning. You just need to learn how to unlock them.
It’s our inner-self that craves meaning out of life and desires to be free from the things that keep our spirits in bondage. A life spent as a slave to superficial things will never help us to answer our questions nor satisfy our curiosities of the things that drive us and why. It has always been the hungers of our flesh, and the desires of our primitive-self that fragments our souls in inner conflict and leaves us torn between the forces of darkness and light. A life filled with worldly desires always leads to a dead end, but a spiritual life fuses you together into wholeness. Wholeness is the key, it is the marriage of mind, body and spirit. Spirituality, it is the union of your thoughts, actions and feelings, united and dedicated to a single purpose. When these three aspects of you are scattered, there is always conflict within. But when they work together, there are few obstacles in your life that they cannot overcome. So, the goal of your life should be; to be united mind, body and spirit with our Creator.
You see, our loving Creator has written all the answers we seek within our lives. He uses your very own life, to answer your own questions.
Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse
This means that the spiritual answers we seek are seen all around us in our everyday life. And by this reasoning each and every one of us is being made into a life without an excuse. The answers to our joy and salvation He has written upon our very hearts so that we can find them hidden within ourselves. This is why our own personal spiritual journey is so important. Your quest of discovery is uniquely custom designed for only you to unlock.
2 Corinthians 3:1 Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some others, epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you?2 You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men;3 clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.
“So how do I unlock the secrets within myself” you might ask. Your heart is the key to the great mystery of life. You just need to learn how to read it. But before you can read it you must first understand how the secret works. Their are two paths in your life. One leads to self-discovery and unity and the other leads to self-gratification and separation.
Matthew 7:13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.
The quest for truth is not something that you put off until tomorrow. Simply put, if you are not seeking anything, you are not finding anything. It is when we set our foot upon the path and our mind to the task that self-discovery begins. As a child you set your heart to discovery but as you grew older you began to forget to ask the questions of why. In this age of science and reasoning, many of us have sadly allowed ourselves to become the orphans of a great wisdom and we have forgotten to seek out the hidden mysteries of our life.
Ecclesiastes 1:13 And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be exercised.
Lucky for us, you’re never too old to ask for help from your Father. Once you start to ask in earnest your answers will come to you in many ways.
Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
All journeys of self-discovery start with a single starting point… yourself, and the door you’re knocking on is the gateway to your soul, your heart! But a heart that is closed off and empty will never answer the call.
In example: In your lifetime, you undoubtedly have met somebody who seems to be very miserable, each and every day. They are angry and bitter and short with you or others, on everything they do and say. A person like this is generally miserable within themselves, and their misery generally spills out onto others because it can’t be confined within themselves.
James 1:21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
When you’re miserable with yourself, how can you be happy with anything else? How can anybody still rejoice in happiness when their hearts are filled with the bitterness of tears? The problem is, when our souls are empty we try to fill it with earthly delights, but how can empty things fill emptiness? Much of the things we desire are an illusion. Control, wealth, power, fame and security are all illusions. Each of these things are like having a giant hole and the more you put into it, the more it just keeps taking away. So you just keep shoveling more and more into it, hoping that the next shovelful will fill the hole forever. But it never does. Because it can’t. These are all the essence of the greedy ego that can never be truly satisfied.
Proverbs 27:20 Hell and Destruction are never full; So the eyes of man are never satisfied.
In science there are two words that could help illustrate this meaning. One is centrifugal and the other is centripetal. Both of these apply to forces, generally along the curved path of a circle.
- The word centrifugal is Latin in origin, and it means center-fleeing. This is like when you have a record player and you put a penny on it and the faster the record spins the faster that penny goes flying across the room! This also works with a child on a merry-go-round!
- The word centripetal is also Latin in origin, and it means center-seeking. This is like the planets, they orbit the sun but they don’t go flying off into space. If they did, life on this planet would have a very different meaning. Instead, lucky for us, they find balance with it. They seek a type of union and harmony with the sun.
With all of us, we too have a choice; do we work in harmony with each other, or do we go off on our own? Now, it is one thing to disagree with a crowd or others, but is a very different thing to disagree with yourself. If you don’t like what is being preached by the choir you can always tune-out and walk awaym but how do you tune-out or walk away from yourself? Quite simply, you can’t. So now you’re left with a choice, do you choose the path of separation, or do you choose the path of unity?
With separation you feel disjointed and at odds with yourself. How do you live a life where your mind and feelings are going in separate directions, or when the lust of your body gets in the way of your will and aspirations? Quite simply a house divided cannot stand.
Mark 3:25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
When you flee the center of yourself, you fragment your soul. What I mean is, when you try to break and flee from the path that God has laid-out before you and try to go out on your own, you create a disconnect between you and God because you created a division within yourself. It is not that God has left you, it is simply that you refuse to listen to what is being told to you and this makes you deaf to all else that is being said by Him in your heart.
Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
You see, much of life works like a mirror. When you stress and strain against His will you fail to reflect the image that God created for your life. You end up instead shattering the image and a thousand different aspects of yourself are then created, each one vying for your attention and time. And when you look into a broken mirror it’s disorienting and confusing to discern, and much like looking into a fun house mirror, the image becomes grossly distorted and your true inner-self distorts away from that of God’s plan.
2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
We are all meant to reflect the glory of God by letting His character be seen in us, in all we do. Our purpose in life is to mirror the essence of the universe by trying to find a type of harmony and unity in everything, and by helping it to expand and grow. Just as the glory of God is reflected in everything, so are we too, meant to reflect the glory of Him in all things that we are a part of. We need to find unity with all things. We need to find balance in our lives, because chaos only brings about more chaos, but self-discipline and self-discovery are the key to unity and peace within. And when you are at peace with yourself it has the added bonus of being contagious to those around you.
Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
There is simply no hiding a life in-tuned with God. It would be easier to hide a life set apart from Him. But what is a life alone but lonely? The essence of all creation lives within you, so why flee as if you are not a part of something so fantastic and amazing as… well, EVERYTHING!
What did the Zen Buddhist monk say to the hot dog vendor?
“Can you make me one with everything?”
